Many people view self-checkout kiosks as a fantastic use of modern technology. You can easily get in and out of grocery stores in a breeze without having to worry about interacting with anyone else on those days that you may be feeling a little antisocial. However, since using a self-checkout kiosk allows you to purchase items while seemingly remaining unmonitored by staff, some people also view it as a good opportunity to shoplift. You may be especially tempted to sneak something into your bag if you’ve heard about the recent self-checkout scams that have been taking place at Walmart.

As it turns out though, this may be riskier than you think—especially if you’re shopping at Walmart. One former employee of the superstore recently took to TikTok to give a warning to anyone who may think they can get away with using self-checkout to shoplift. According to her, employees are notified about missed scans. Find all of the details below.

Walmart employee warns shoplifters about self-checkout

TikTok user @brebre42010 may have just saved some people a lot of trouble with a recent video she posted. In the text over the short clip, which features the Walmart employee sighing and lip-syncing “d—–ss b–ch,” she gives a warning: “Me watching people at self checkout as if my phone doesn’t notify me for every missed scan.” Wait… what? Yikes!

If this is true, it seems like people should definitely think twice before trying anything funny at the registers. Walmart or not, there are likely more security measures in place than you’re aware of.

Employees have made similar warnings on TikTok before. One former employee, @obeygoddess, shed some light on the issue last year. “Do not steal from Walmart self-checkouts… you will get caught,” she said. She even noted that employees have handheld devices that allow them to pause your checkout process if needed.

“It will show us your entire order and everything that you’ve so far scanned in, and if we suspect that you’re stealing, there’s going to be an option at the bottom that says ‘pause transaction,'” she explained. We had no idea!

Ultimately, of course, you probably shouldn’t have to be told not to shoplift. However, if you were thinking of getting away with something next time you’re using the self-checkout machine, we’re here to tell you that it’s best to listen to the advice of these employees and stay on the safe side: pay for everything. After all, with so many great deals at Walmart, they’re practically a steal anyway!
