WESTON — The CEO of Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital appeared alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis Saturday morning at the governor's daily coronavirus briefing.
DeSantis appeared with Dr. Greg Rosencrance and other Cleveland Clinic officials at a hospital in Weston.
"It's an honor and a privilege to care for our community, to care for our fellow human beings and to care for the state of Florida," Rosencrance said.
He credited communication and partnerships with first responders, government entities and long-term care facilities as being the keys for his hospital's response to the COVID-19 crisis.
Wael Barsoum, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida, also at the press conference touted the hospital chain's research initiative, part of which will take place in Port St. Lucie.
The new Center for Global and Emerging Pathogens will encompass research at the new Florida Research and Innovations Center near the Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital. The center, which is to open by July 1, will “broaden understanding of emerging pathogens” from the Zika virus to the coronavirus, and will “expedite critically needed treatments and vaccines," the company announced Wednesday.
Also at the press conference, DeSantis said he is in no rush to lift restrictions on Florida’s businesses shuttered by an executive order he issued earlier this month that is set to expire Thursday. But he's also seeking guidance from the Re-Open Florida Task Force, which is expected to submit recommendations to him in the next week.
DeSantis said more than 334,000 people in Florida have been tested for the virus. Fewer than 10% of those tests have produced a positive result.
