NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — One of Nashville's largest employers, SmileDirectClub, abruptly shut down in early December leaving more than 2,000 employees without a job weeks before Christmas.
The company’s headquarters had been in South Nashville.
Melissa Malingowski worked at SmileDirectClub for six years, and says her coworkers were like family and she loved being there.
“We were just going about our workday. When I said that nobody knew, nobody knew," said Malingowski. "I mean, we were making plans for next week, we were working on projects."
But after lunch, Malingowski says the oral care company pulled everyone to the production floor and told them they were shutting down, effective immediately.
The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce says SmileDirectClub was Nashville’s 21st largest employer.
“I cried. I was a hot mess," said Malingowski. "We were just hugging each other and crying and trying to figure out what we were gonna do next."
Malingowski believes SmileDirectClub handled the shutdown poorly and thinks they should’ve at least given employees until the end of the year.
“Some of us hadn’t finished our Christmas shopping yet and some of us have rent due in two weeks and they were like this is your last pay day, so I’m not getting a check at New Year which means I’m not able to pay my rent on the first,” said Malingowski.
FOX 17 News contacted the company and asked for an explanation for abruptly shutting down. We are waiting for a response.
The company announced the closure on its website and told existing customers to contact another provider if they’re still getting billed, and more information on refunds will be available at a later date.
The statement also says the Lifetime Smile Guarantee plan is no longer in place and there is no longer a customer care support line, leaving some customers in limbo.
