An Alabama Department of Corrections worker has died from COVID-19, the first employee death in the state prison system.

ADOC officials announced the death Thursday night. They did not identify the employee but said he or she worked at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka. The staff member recently had tested posted for COVID-19, said spokeswoman Samantha Rose.

“The ADOC extends its heartfelt condolences to the employee’s family and loved ones during this difficult time and is forever grateful for the employee’s service to the department,‘' Rose stated in the press release. “This is the department’s first COVID-19-related staff or contracted staff death.”

Five state inmates have died so far after testing positive COVID-19, the most recent happening earlier this week when 59-year-old Allen Barton, serving a 99-year sentence for rape, died Tuesday at a hospital. He’d been transferred to the hospital from Staton’s infirmary on June 18 when he tested positive. He was considered high-risk due to his advanced chronic health conditions.

Additionally, Rose announced Thursday that ADOC was informed via self-reporting that one staff member employed at the Criminal Justice Center in Montgomery and one staff member employed at Tutwiler have tested positive for COVID-19. Both promptly self-quarantined under the direction of their healthcare providers.

The ADOC’s Office of Health Services has initiated an investigation to determine which, if any, ADOC inmates or employees may have had direct, prolonged exposure to these staff members. OHS will advise any staff with direct exposure to contact their healthcare providers and self-quarantine for the recommended 14-day period, or as advised by their healthcare providers.

In total, 80 COVID-19 cases among ADOC staff and contracted staff remain active. Seventy-two staff members who previously self-reported a positive test have been cleared by medical providers to return to work. Among the inmate population, 62 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, 39 of which remain active.
