The Metropolitan Pier & Exposition Authority board has picked Larita Reed-Clark as the authority’s permanent CEO, overseeing McCormick Place, the Hyatt Regency, the Marriott Marquis Chicago and the 10,000-seat Wintrust Arena.
Reed-Clark had already been serving as acting CEO since October, when then-CEO Lori Healy left the top job. She later landed at Chicago development and design firm Clayco.
Reed-Clark has been at the agency—better known as McPier—since 1984, rising through various financial roles, including controller and director of finance and administration of McCormick Place. In a statement, she said she is committed to “expanding Chicago’s global tourism profile while creating opportunities for the communities here at home.”
The appointment created a tussle between Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot over who should take over McPier. While Lightfoot’s office said she and Pritzker were on the same page over the appointment, earlier sources told Crain’s she was pushing for DePaul University Chief Financial Officer Jeff Bethke. Attention was drawn to Reed-Clark’s residency in Indiana. The governor’s team has said she would move here once she got the job full time.
“Larita Clark has outstanding credentials and a deep understanding of MPEA and the convention industry, and I am confident she is the right choice to lead this organization,” Pritzker said in a statement. “With decades of leadership and financial experience at the authority, I know that Larita will be a strong partner as we work to attract more conventions to Illinois, grow our tourism industry and enhance MPEA’s campus and the surrounding communities.”
“The McCormick Place campus is critical to Chicago’s thriving tourism and convention industry, and Larita Clark brings the necessary leadership experience and financial acumen to ensure the continued success of this economic engine for our city and state,” the mayor said in the same statement.
