A former Coleman Community Schools employee charged with embezzlement opted on Thursday to take her chances with a jury.

Christine Johnson, 57, is accused of taking money from the school district in October 2022. Johnson, of Midland, was the school district’s payroll benefits specialist. She is charged with felony embezzlement of between $1,000 and $20,000 by an agent or trustee.

Midland County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Yelsik said Johnson's plea agreement offered a chance to plead guilty to attempted embezzlement. Johnson rejected the plea offer before Midland County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Carras.

When the judge asked Johnson Thursday if she understood penalties she faces if convicted of the original charge at trial, the suspect said she did.

Johnson remains out of jail on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond. No trial date has been set.

The Coleman Community Schools Board of Education hired Johnson in December 2021. Johnson resigned from the job in mid-October 2022, said Superintendent Jennifer McCormack.

McCormack said the school administration fully cooperated with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office on its investigation.

In a previous interview, McCormack said she couldn’t comment on specifics of the alleged crime.
