An on-duty BART employee was identified as the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian on April 5 in South San Francisco, officials said.
The driver was identified by the South San Francisco Police Department as 52-year-old Joaquin Duarte, who was working as a system service foreworker for the transit agency.
The pedestrian was walking through a marked crosswalk at 1:06 a.m. on the 1500 block of El Camino Real when a driver hit him and fled the scene, SFGATE previously reported.
The pedestrian was identified as 45-year-old William King of South San Francisco, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office told SFGATE. Officials previously told SFGATE that the pedestrian had been found by a motorist and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
James Allison, a spokesperson for BART, issued the following statement to SFGATE: “First and foremost, BART wants to express sincere condolences to the victim’s family. BART is fully cooperating with the police investigation into this tragedy. While we’re unable to provide any details on the incident in question, we can confirm that Joaquin Duarte has been employed as a System Service Foreworker at BART. Because this is an active investigation, BART is unable to comment further at this time.”
Detectives arrested Duarte on Tuesday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an injury collision, South San Francisco Police said. He was booked in San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City.
