By Divyanshi Sharma: Meta recently disclosed its plans to let go of an additional 10,000 employees. This move came after the company had already eliminated 11,000 roles in 2022. Thus, the company has announced laying off a total of 21,000 employees till now. The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, acknowledged that the company had hired excessively during the pandemic and is now trying to keep up with the current economic circumstances. Ever since the tech giant announced its second round of layoffs, LinkedIn is full of stories of people who have been impacted by the decision. While some people reported receiving their layoff notice as 4:00 am, others said that they were laid off on maternity leaves.

One such Meta employee shared his layoff experience on the job-search platform and called it an 'emotional roller-coaster'. The ex-Meta employee also added that nothing could have prepared him for this experience.

Ex-Meta employee on layoffs

Chris Bowler, who had been working with Meta since August 2021, wrote on LinkedIn that nothing could have prepared him for the 'emotional rollercoaster', referring to the feeling of being laid off.

He wrote, "Just over 24 hours have passed since I was notified, I was one of the many who had been impacted by the Meta Layoffs. Nothing had prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster I have been through since then and I imagine, like many, will continue to go through for the next few days/weeks or longer."

Recalling his experience of working at Meta, Bowler wrote, "Reflecting on the past one and half years working with the talented people in the infrastructure team, specifically DEC Design and Retrofits, it’s starting to sink in the amount of scope and opportunity I was able to contribute to and support others in my role as a manager and project lead. I am proud to have helped increase the business capacity and shape the overall direction of the company.

"With any great company it starts with the people and the culture they create within. There are too many people to thank who I have connected with on my journey at Meta. If I haven’t reached out personally be sure I will, it’s just taking me some time."

Mark Zuckerberg on layoffs

The company's decision to fire 10,000 people was announced by Mark Zuckerberg via an email.

"We expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven't yet hired," the Meta CEO wrote and added, "This will be tough and there’s no way around that. It will mean saying goodbye to talented and passionate colleagues who have been part of our success. They’ve dedicated themselves to our mission and I’m personally grateful for all their efforts. We will support people in the same ways we have before and treat everyone with the gratitude they deserve."

At the beginning of this year, Mark Zuckerberg had declared 2023 as the 'year of efficiency' and had said that the company will be 'removing some layers of management to boost efficiency' during an internal meeting.
