Two months af­ter his abrupt ex­it from J&J, Math­ai Mam­men is crop­ping up as a top can­di­date to suc­ceed Michel Vounatsos as Bio­gen’s next CEO, STAT re­port­ed.

Bio­gen an­nounced Vounatsos’ planned de­par­ture in May as the com­pa­ny reeled from the fall­out of re­strict­ed Medicare cov­er­age for Aduhelm, the Alzheimer’s drug that won a con­tro­ver­sial ap­proval at the FDA but flopped in the mar­ket, forc­ing a scale­down of the com­mer­cial roll­out and a painful re­struc­tur­ing. Cir­cum­stances, though, have since changed dra­mat­i­cal­ly, with Bio­gen and part­ners at Ei­sai re­cent­ly re­port­ing pos­i­tive da­ta for the fol­low-on Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab.

When reached by End­points News, a Bio­gen spokesper­son re­spond­ed: “The search for a new CEO is on­go­ing, and in the mean­time, Michel Vounatsos and the lead­er­ship team are fo­cused on de­liv­er­ing on the com­pa­ny’s mis­sion and busi­ness pri­or­i­ties.”

Where­as Vounatsos was pro­mot­ed to CEO from a chief com­mer­cial of­fi­cer role, Mam­men — who left his role lead­ing J&J’s big R&D group to, in his words, “pur­sue my next lead­er­ship role” — would bring a sci­en­tif­ic back­ground to the job. And that’s ex­act­ly the shift that Bio­gen is look­ing for, ac­cord­ing to STAT, cit­ing sources fa­mil­iar with the search.

A co-founder of Ther­a­vance, Mam­men served as SVP of R&D at the biotech for years be­fore mov­ing to Mer­ck and even­tu­al­ly J&J. Dur­ing his five years there — first as R&D chief at Janssen then pro­mot­ed to the phar­ma gi­ant’s top cir­cle ear­li­er this year — Mam­men took some pret­ty bold bets. One promi­nent ex­am­ple was the de­ci­sion to part­ner with Chi­na’s Leg­end, then an ob­scure play­er, on a BC­MA CAR-T that’s gone on to score FDA ap­proval.

He was al­so named, along­side oth­er top ex­ecs, in a gen­der dis­crim­i­na­tion and ha­rass­ment suit brought by a for­mer VP. J&J re­cent­ly set­tled the suit.

Mam­men — or who­ev­er Bio­gen ul­ti­mate­ly names CEO — will be tasked with rein­vig­o­rat­ing a biotech gi­ant whose rep­u­ta­tion has suf­fered as the Aduhelm fi­as­co dragged on. And per­haps strike some of those deals that an­a­lysts have long called for.
