Two months after his abrupt exit from J&J, Mathai Mammen is cropping up as a top candidate to succeed Michel Vounatsos as Biogen’s next CEO, STAT reported.
Biogen announced Vounatsos’ planned departure in May as the company reeled from the fallout of restricted Medicare coverage for Aduhelm, the Alzheimer’s drug that won a controversial approval at the FDA but flopped in the market, forcing a scaledown of the commercial rollout and a painful restructuring. Circumstances, though, have since changed dramatically, with Biogen and partners at Eisai recently reporting positive data for the follow-on Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab.
When reached by Endpoints News, a Biogen spokesperson responded: “The search for a new CEO is ongoing, and in the meantime, Michel Vounatsos and the leadership team are focused on delivering on the company’s mission and business priorities.”
Whereas Vounatsos was promoted to CEO from a chief commercial officer role, Mammen — who left his role leading J&J’s big R&D group to, in his words, “pursue my next leadership role” — would bring a scientific background to the job. And that’s exactly the shift that Biogen is looking for, according to STAT, citing sources familiar with the search.
A co-founder of Theravance, Mammen served as SVP of R&D at the biotech for years before moving to Merck and eventually J&J. During his five years there — first as R&D chief at Janssen then promoted to the pharma giant’s top circle earlier this year — Mammen took some pretty bold bets. One prominent example was the decision to partner with China’s Legend, then an obscure player, on a BCMA CAR-T that’s gone on to score FDA approval.
He was also named, alongside other top execs, in a gender discrimination and harassment suit brought by a former VP. J&J recently settled the suit.
Mammen — or whoever Biogen ultimately names CEO — will be tasked with reinvigorating a biotech giant whose reputation has suffered as the Aduhelm fiasco dragged on. And perhaps strike some of those deals that analysts have long called for.
