Police in Chicago say that a worker at a well-known hot dog stand was fatally shot in the face at a service window early Friday morning.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the 31-year-old employee at the Original Maxwell Street hot dog stand was working at the window when "he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body."
In a statement to Newsweek, the department said an "unknown offender" approached the window, "produced a firearm and fired shots towards the victim."
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police said that they have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident and are still investigating.
CBS Chicago reported Friday that the victim reportedly had gotten into an argument with someone earlier in the night.
"There's information that there may have been an argument between the two of those individuals—the victim and the offender—prior to that occurring," Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan told the news station.
The hot dog stand where the worker was shot is known for its hot dogs, Polish sausages, and other fast food items.
"It's terrible. I mean, to do that? Somebody comes in to make money, and they're going to kill somebody for what—Polishes?" a customer at the restaurant, Rubia Rodriguez, told CBS Chicago.
Other Incidents of Gunfire at Restaurants
In a separate incident in January at a Taco Bell drive-thru in Los Angeles, police said a man shot and killed an employee after the worker refused to accept a counterfeit bill. The shooter allegedly attempted to use the fake money to pay for their meal and when the employee declined, the suspect opened fire, according to police.
In January at a Wendy's restaurant in Phoenix, a 16-year-old drive-thru worker was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he was shot in the head. Police said the shooting broke out after a customer's argument about extra barbecue sauce escalated.
"It became a confrontation. That somebody actually got shot over some barbecue sauce...So that was a confrontation, 'cause the dude couldn't get no extra barbecue sauce. My son just stayed quiet and had the guy's change in his hand. Just stayed quiet while the other two was in confrontation," the man's father, Brian Durham Sr., told Fox 11 News at the time.
In Dallas in February, police said that a 19-year-old was shot and killed at a Raising Cane's drive-thru while sitting in a car.
