Broadway League And Actors’ Union Set Terms For Required Employee Vaccines - Forbes

gandenganaja.blogspot.com

As part of a sweeping array of COVID policies in the entertainment industry, the Actors’ Equity labor union has struck a deal with the Broadway League trade organization, which will require all members to receive vaccines if they are employed under a production contract.

This would apply to both Broadway houses and sit-down venues across the country, and is in keeping with a growing push to require inoculations at all levels of the industry. Several companies, including Hamilton, already stipulated employees be vaccinated prior to the September 14 reopening. And on the West coast, film producers and studios have the right to require vaccines for anyone on active sets.

Members who are vaccine-ineligible due to medical conditions, or feel they should be exempt due to religious views, may request accommodation from their producers, who are not obligated to provide it. In addition, the tradition of greeting cast members at the stage door is now forbidden, as are backstage tours for members of the public.

It’s the latest in a series of major announcements from the union, which represents actors and stage managers. Earlier in July, it established a brand-new membership policy, greatly easing access to those looking for union work and protections (provided they can pay the entry fees).

The membership protocol partly resulted from the racial reckoning that continues to rearrange the country, and the theater industry. Equity drew fire last year from members and activists claiming it didn’t do enough to support its members of color, and that the opaque membership requirements were contributing to racialized gatekeeping. The union’s first delegate convention dissolved in April when members of color staged walkout after feeling sidelined and attacked by white members and leadership.

Equity is only one of fourteen labor unions that work the forty-one Broadway houses, many of which have also drawn heated criticism regarding racial and gendered discrimination within their ranks. Equity is the first to make such sweeping changes in response, and the first to announce a vaccine-for-work requirement. However, the announcement said that the League will also enforce comparable vaccine mandates for members of other unions, though it did not elaborate.

Ultimately, the protocol comes not a moment too soon. The first play to open in a Broadway theater since March 2020, Pass Over, starts previews next week.
