When we shop at the grocery store, we usually pay more attention to groceries than to the employees in the store.

What You Need To Know

  • Kathy Kratz, 66, is a Health and Safety Coordinator at Wegman's in Liverpool

  • She's held multiple positions and numerous shifts since she was first employed by the grocery super chain 48 years ago in 1972

  • Kathy said she has made numerous memories and friendships working at Wegman's and she still loves going to work everyday

  • She hopes to hit the 50-year milestone in two years and continue working beyond that

But if you shop at Wegman's in the Syracuse area, you may be familiar with one employee who's been with the company for almost five decades.

Kathy Kratz is a familiar face at Wegman's stores across the Syracuse area. At 66-years old, she began working at the supermarket chain in 1972 at the age of 17.

She recalls her first job as a cashier at the former Pond Street store on the north side.

"We used to have a conveyor belt and we bagged the groceries into totes and we had to put them on a conveyor belt outside for the customers to pickup their groceries outside," said Kratz.

Forty eight years later, Kathy is still a hard working Wegman's employee. Today she's the Syracuse Division Human Safety Coordinator.

"I'm all about keeping our employees and our customers safe. So, I go through the departments, make sure they're using the PPE Wegman's has provided them to keep them safe. Make sure they know about chemical safety," Kratz said.

Kathy teaches daily safety courses to team leaders while she travels to nine stores within the area to do inspections. During her stops she's never hesitant to do a little extra.

"I think Kathy is a great asset to Wegman's. I think we're really lucky to have her high standards on our team. She's always coming around asking if there's anything she can help with or if there's anything we need, ensuring food safety around the entire store," said Wegman's employee Keionna Sawyer.

Kathy has worked her way through a variety of positions over the years. And, as for her future?

"I have forty eight years now and I'm not ready to stop working. I'm enjoying what I'm doing and I want to get at least fifty years, if not many many more," Kratz said.

With her positive attitude and strong work ethic -- that's good news for Wegman's and its customers.

Kathy said the best part of working for Wegman's is meeting and helping people everyday. She also said she's had some great co-workers which have made it enjoyable to go to work everyday.
