Manchester, N.Y. – A high school employee - faced with a 15-year-old student with a loaded handgun - managed to calm and disarm the student without anyone being hurt.
The employee’s actions Friday at the Ontario County school are being heralded as “truly heroic” by the local sheriff.
Around 10:19 a.m. Friday, 911 dispatchers received a report that a student at Red Jacket High School in Manchester had a handgun inside the school’s main office, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said in a news conference Friday recorded by RochesterFirst.com. The school is about 60 miles west of Syracuse.
The student was in the main office for a routine meeting with a school staff member. The unnamed staff member was “alerted” that the student had a handgun on his person, Povero said.
The staff member was able to calm the student down and disarm him before deputies arrived at the school, Povero said.
The student had a loaded semi-automatic handgun and a second clip, he said. They do not know how the teen came into possession of the weapon.
The school was placed on lockdown and the student was taken into custody when deputies arrived, he said.
“The actions of the Red Jacket school staff to calm, and eventually disarm this student were truly heroic,” Povero said.
Povero was not able to describe how exactly the staff member was able to disarm the student.
Povero said the actions taken by the staff helped avoid what could have been a very serious and dangerous situation.
Povero lauded the school’s administrators for training their staff on what to do in emergency and lockdown situations. He said the training helped to keep other students and staff safe during the lockdown.
Deputies do not know why the student brought the gun to school, he said. They are actively investigating what the student was planning to use the gun for.
The student is currently in the custody of the sheriff’s office, he said.
The incident is still under investigation, he said.
The student could be facing criminal charges, including criminal possession of a weapon.
