Burgerville has picked a Portland restaurant owner as its new CEO.
Ed Casey, the owner of downtown Portland restaurant Cheryl’s on 12th, will take over as the Vancouver-based fast food chain’s top executive, the company said. Casey co-owns Cheryl’s on 12th with his wife. He is also a former Baja Fresh franchise owner and former CEO of The Counter, a burger restaurant with locations in six states.
“He brings the experience needed for this role, as well as the leadership qualities we sought,” said Jennifer Mears of The Holland Inc, Burgerville’s parent company, in a prepared statement. “Our new CEO has to be someone who shares Burgerville values – outstanding employees, exceptional service and food quality, dedicated local sourcing and thriving communities. Ed holds these values and will bring them to the CEO role.”
Casey succeeds Jill Taylor, who stepped down as CEO in January after five years as the company’s top executive to return to her family’s consulting company, The Taylor Group.
Casey takes over two months after Burgerville workers at five of the company’s locations voted to ratify a labor contract, making them the nation’s first fast-food chain employees to be covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The agreement came after three years of negotiations between Burgerville employees and the company.
The company has also recently been navigating pandemic-induced shipping delays, staff shortages and rising costs. Those issues forced the fast-food chain to temporarily close some of its restaurants in recent months.
Burgerville has 39 restaurant locations in Oregon and Washington and employs about 1,000, the company said.
“I have admired Burgerville for many years for its commitment to local, sustainable and high-quality food with thoughtful consideration of employees, vendors, guests and community,” Casey said in a prepared statement.
