Kensington's splash pad is closed Tuesday after an employee tested positive for COVID-19, but will reopen Wednesday after two deep cleans were performed.

The seasonal employee's test result was received late Monday, and the Oakland County Health Division was notified Tuesday morning. The worker had last worked July 23 and was not symptomatic at that time, complying with the metroparks health screening. The employee wore a face mask for the entire shift, as required.

“Ensuring the health and safety of park visitors and employees is always our top priority," Huron-Clinton Metroparks Director Amy McMillan said. "That’s why we temporarily closed the Kensington splash pad to do a further deep cleaning and make this public notification as an added precaution on top of local, state and federal guidance. Metroparks is committed to communicating every step of the way and going above and beyond to help protect our visitors, team and communities against this virus.”

Park officials said "Given the employee’s outdoor job duties at the water park, it is unlikely that any patron would have been considered in close, sustained contact."

Six Metroparks employees who were in close contact with the infected worker were notified and have been instructed to self-quarantine for 14 days.

The employee was tested on Saturday, July 25, after a friend outside work tested positive.

Deep cleaning for COVID involves disinfecting all touch surfaces, cleaning all surfaces of the restroom, all surfaces of the employee booth area (where wristbands purchased) and powerwashing inside of the splash pad area. The splash 'n' blast uses chlorinated water for another level of disinfecting, Danielle Mauter, chief of marketing and communications for Huron-Clinton Metroparks, said.

She added that if the splash pad into staffing level issue related to a shortage of employees due to being quarantined, it's possible it could close once more.

The Splash ‘N’ Blast opened in late June with capacity limits and operating adjustments, including three sessions capped at 50% capacity available each day, modified layouts in standing and seating areas, social distancing requirements, and enhanced sanitation of high-touch areas and equipment.

The metroparks implemented numerous other COVID-19 preventive measures while keeping the 13 metroparks outdoor spaces open. Visit metroparks.com/covid for more information.

There have been no other park closures due to park employees testing positive for COVID-19.
