A businessman in Spain has been arrested for allegedly placing a tracking device on a car belonging to an employee who was on sick leave.
The employee, who had been diagnosed as suffering from anxiety after a long-running work dispute with his boss, said he found the GPS device on the underside of his vehicle while he was washing it.
“I got underneath the car and saw that the plastic had been broken and there was this device attached,” the unnamed worker told Spain’s Antena 3 news show.
The Guardia Civil police force said they had arrested a businessman in the Seville area on suspicion of an invasion of privacy offence. He has not been named.
A video released by the police force showed officers escorting a middle-aged man from his office to a patrol car.
Investigators found that the GPS device placed under the car was fitted with a SIM card in the name of a company hundreds of miles from Seville, in Zaragoza, with which the accused man had no relation.
No one from the company in Zaragoza had noticed that the firm was being billed for a SIM card it was not using.
‘It creates a lot of insecurity’
The arrested man is also accused of document fraud in relation to the SIM card contract and damage to property for allegedly placing the device under his employee’s car.
A Seville court is now investigating the case and will decide whether to proceed with criminal charges against the businessman.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and it creates a lot of insecurity, especially given the reason I was on medical leave. This only makes it worse and heightens anxiety,” the employee said.
The five-year professional relationship between the two men had apparently been fractious.
