By Ankita Garg: Layoffs are being done across the tech industry and thousands of employees who were working at Microsoft, Google as well as Meta are impacted in a big way. People are facing financial issues and are unable to support their families, while some have limited time to secure a new job or they will be deported to their home country because of an H1B visa. There are workers who are on a job hunt for months and are struggling to find a job. Nicholas Knowlton, who was recently laid off at Microsoft, is one of them.

Knowlton has been searching for a job for the past two months, ever since Microsoft announced the layoffs. The laid off employee was a cloud solution engineer at the company, and he is now actively looking for new roles. Knowlton revealed on LinkedIn that he has applied for more than 250 roles and attended 57 recruiter calls, but he hasn’t secured a job offer yet.
On his last day at work, the cloud solution engineer from North Carolina, US, wrote, "Today is my official last day after being impacted by the Microsoft layoffs in March. I've been on a journey for the past two months, giving my all to secure a new job. Here are some numbers that reflect my efforts: 250+ applications, 57 recruiter calls, 15 hiring manager interviews, 3 final rounds, and 0 offers," he wrote on LinkedIn.
He also wrote that most of the interviews end by saying we have decided to hire someone else and that not securing a job has created financial issues. He is also struggling because his family is able to provide limited support during tough times.
"It's been a roller coaster ride, with many interviews ending in "they decided to choose another candidate to move forward," Knowlton wrote on LinkedIn.
Microsoft fired 10,000 employees, but revealed new people would be hired
Earlier this year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced in an email that the company is firing as many as 10,000 employees. He revealed that the tech company will have to let go of thousands of its employees because of "macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities."
The CEO wrote, "While we are eliminating roles in some areas, we will continue to hire in key strategic areas." He also elaborated upon the importance of building a 'new computer platform' with the use of artificial intelligence. He wrote, "We’re also seeing organizations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one."
