Video Transcript

RACHELLE AKUFFO: Big tech firms are gearing up for more labor activism in 2023 after seeing an unprecedented rise in union organization this year. Now Apple and Amazon both felt the effects of these efforts as they tried to navigate the path ahead. Well, joining us now with more is Yahoo Finance's Allie Garfinkle. This really has been an incredible year for unions.

ALLIE GARFINKLE: It really has, Rachelle. And there was a time where unionizing in big tech seemed completely impossible. But here we are, talking about it. And I think it's worth starting where things are at for Apple right now. You have the Maryland store that's preparing to start negotiating its contract early next year. And I was talking to a worker at the Oklahoma City store just yesterday. And what he was saying is he is also eyeing the beginning of next year for negotiating their contracts.

And it's worth tying this in with Amazon a little because even though I would argue that Amazon workers and Apple workers are in very different situations, they have one thing in common when I talk to them. They say that this will not stop in 2023. Macro be damned, labor organizing in tech isn't going away. That's the message I've gotten from workers across the board, Rachelle.

AKIKO FUJITA: Allie, I guess there's a question about how much leverage workers have, as we continue to see the labor market slow a little more, right? When it was a tight market, they had a lot more leverage. You mentioned Amazon. What's the next step here in terms of its union push?

ALLIE GARFINKLE: Yeah, Akiko, I think that's a great question because the reality is, in Amazon's case in particular, but for Apple, too, they have a deep challenge. Contract negotiations take a lot of time. They take a lot of resources. And companies are incentivized to stall for as long as possible. The average negotiating period, Akiko, takes about 465 days, according to Bloomberg. So it's going to be a long haul. And I think as much as there's this message of this isn't stopping for workers, I think there's also going to be pressure on these unions to deliver results in 2023 against a lot of odds.
