On Thursday, August 11th, 2022, a verbal disagreement between a Spirit Airlines gate agent and a passenger turned violent. The incident was captured on video by bystanders and uploaded to social media. The video shows both parties engaging in a violent exchange. Spirit stated that the airport police had filed a report, and neither party has been charged for any misconduct. The airport employee has been temporarily suspended from work.

A violent encounter

On Friday, August 12th, 2022, Spirit Airlines announced that it had suspended an airport gate agent that engaged in a violent encounter with a passenger. The incident occurred a day prior, on Thursday, at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport(DFW). The incident was recorded and uploaded to Twitter. Since being uploaded, the video has received over six million views.

Following the incident airport, police arrived and filled out a report. Police interviewed both parties, and neither was taken into custody. The police also interviewed several bystanders and reviewed footage captured by airport security cameras and other passengers' phones.

Spirit responds

The day following the incident, Spirit Airlines responded by having its vendor company suspend the employee involved. The employee, who was also a supervisor, was employed by a third-party company contracted to provide Spirit with gate agents and other airport personnel at DFW. The airline assured the public that it does not tolerate violence of any kind and that it is working with local law enforcement to resolve the issue.

In an announcement, a representative for spirit airlines stated,

"We are aware of this altercation. Our vendor at DFW has suspended the agent.

"Spirit Airlines does not tolerate violence of any kind, and we are working with local law enforcement to investigate this matter."

The official report

The report states that a passenger became upset while boarding a Spirit flight. The passenger reported to the supervising gate agent that there was no seat available for her. The supervisor advised her to wait in line with the attending gate agent. The passenger was uncooperative, leading the supervisor to attempt to take her boarding pass. This led to a verbal argument attracting the attention of bystanders.

At this point, bystanders began recording the incident. The female passenger repeatedly shoves the male supervisor in the video. A male bystander attempted to intervene and separate the two. Following a slur of profanity and homophobic insults directed at the employee from the passenger, the employee forced his way past the bystander and physically attacked the female passenger. Other staff and the bystander managed to break up the altercation.

The female passenger told police that she had done nothing to aggravate the employee and was innocent of any wrongdoing. She claimed that the employee pushed her before people started filming. The police have determined that the female passenger was the aggressor in this situation. The report also states that the passenger may have committed assault.

The DFW Police Department declares this to be an ongoing investigation. More details regarding the event will be released once the case has been closed and the final report is filed.
