DANBURY — Some municipal employees will receive a 1.5 percent raise, including retroactive pay for the last 1 1/2 years.
Danbury City Council approved the raise last week as part of a revised contract with the Danbury Municipal Employees Association. The new terms are similar to the revised agreement with the city firefighters’ union that gave those employees 1.5 percent raises, too.
The unions agreed last year to keep wages the same due to Danbury’s economic situation during COVID-19, as long as that could be renegotiated if the city’s financial circumstances improved.
The contract with the Danbury Municipal Employees Association runs from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023. The raises will cost the city about an additional $180,000, with $88,000 of that coming from the fiscal year 2020-21 budget for retroactive pay, according to a letter from the finance director. The other $92,000 will come from assigned fund balance in the 2021-22 budget.
City Council approved the changes with no questions. The city’s finance director had said the city could afford the raises for firefighters when the council approved the similar terms for that union.
