David Archer, a veteran of Chamber of Commerces in Sausalito, Pismo Beach, and La Quinta, has been named the new president and CEO of the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Archer took the helm on Monday. He replaces Kelly Stroman, a popular chamber head credited with steering local businesses through the pandemic. Stroman left to become the managing director of the new $40 million Friendship Campus in Redondo Beach.

Jill Dunn, the chair of the MB Chamber Board of Directors, said Archer’s qualifications were uniquely suited for the organization.

“We feel so fortunate to have found a candidate with extensive chamber leadership experience,” Dunn said. We look forward to David bringing his knowledge of the inner workings of a chamber to Manhattan Beach.”

Archer, in an interview, said his experience with other chambers will of course be useful, but that he arrives in town with a keen awareness that the MB Chamber is as unique as the community it serves. He noted that the mix of small businesses and large businesses combined with the area’s natural beauty present unusual opportunities.

“From a chamber perspective, the other places I have served have been real tourist-centric. They didn’t have a lot of the large businesses like Chevron, and Northrop nearby,” Archer said. “And so that will be a real opportunity to balance the small businesses with the large businesses. The other thing, the other communities where I worked were tourist-centric, and I know that residents are always hesitant about that. Manhattan Beach is world-renowned and we want to keep it as pristine as we can for residents to enjoy.”

“In the chamber world, they say, ‘You’ve seen one chamber, you’ve seen one chamber.’ Each has its nuances, and what the balance is they need to strike with the community, with visitors, and with the local officials.”

Archer has worked for 10 years in Chamber of Commerce leadership roles. Previous to that, he worked in the banking and financial management sector, including positions with Bank of America, PacificCare Dental and Vision, Edward Jones, Glendale Federal Bank, and Northrop Corporation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Finance and Accounting from Vanguard University, is a graduate of the “Academy” Leadership Program of the Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE), and is a past president of the Rotary Club of La Quinta.

Archer praised his predecessor, and said he hoped to build on a lot of what has already been put in place.

“I know the Chamber’s done some really great things in the past, and they made good progress,” he said. “I hear nothing but good about Kelly and all the work she has done. But I think coming out of this pandemic, there’s still some things that can be done to improve on what’s already in place, and maybe bring some new ideas.”

He said he will maintain an open-door policy and invites anyone to stop by, Chamber members and non-members alike. He said the way the community came together during the pandemic presents a great opportunity moving forward.

“I think this is the first time, and Kelly was instrumental in this, that a lot of the constituents and different organizations are working together,” Archer said. “A lot of bridges are being gapped. And as I talk to people, they are telling me, we really want to keep this going, where everyone is working together cooperatively, not just in their own little fiefdom. It’s an exciting time, and I am excited to be here.”  ER
