Cheshire Fire Chief Jack Casner has been named as the 2020 Connie Wallace Employee of the Year.
Casner, who has served 16 years as chief of the Cheshire FD, was honored at the most recent meeting of the Cheshire Town Council on Tuesday, Jan. 12. In announcing the award, Council Chair Rob Oris outlined Casner’s long history in the Town and how influential he has been to the community.
“Chief Casner has served 16 years as Chief of the Cheshire Fire Department, and many more years as a volunteer firefighter, and he reflects Cheshire in the highest standards,” Oris said. “Chief Casner also serves as the Town of Cheshire Emergency Manager, and has been working around the clock during the pandemic to service the needs of the community.”
The Connie Wallace Employee of the Year is voted on each year by Town employees who choose one of their own to receive the award.
“This vote by his coworkers is a great reflection on Jack,” added Town Manager Sean Kimball. “He (has been) a valuable member of the organization for many years, and is a guiding hand to the Town, especially throughout this year during the pandemic.”
Casner had been instrumental in assisting first responders in the beginning months of the pandemic by securing personal protective equipment and other vital materials for the Town’s workforce.
“To be nominated by a group of your peers is the ultimate recognition,” he stated. “Cheshire has one of the best management teams in Connecticut and I am honored to just be a part of it. I definitely plan on spending many more years here in Cheshire in the future. I am not going anywhere.”
Casner also helped to lead the municipality’s response to multiple natural disasters this year, including Tropical Storm Isaias in the summer, which left the town and many residents without power for almost a week, along with extensive tree and property damage.
“This past year has been incredibly difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but no one has put in more effort than Jack and Maura (Esposito, Chesprocott Health District director) during this time,” said Town Council member Peter Talbot. “Jack is the embodiment of the Connie Wallace Employee of the Year award.”
Casner humbly accepted the recognition and thanked everyone for the award.
“I am flattered and humbled to be honored like this, this is not anything that I look for, I’m usually the behind the scenes guy,” Casner added. “But I can’t take full credit for it because of the great team I have behind me.”
