A car slammed through the side of a credit union Wednesday morning in Clairemont, injuring an employee seated at her desk inside the building, San Diego police said.
The employee, 38, suffered a broken right foot, Officer Tony Martinez said. Investigators believe the driver, a 31-year-old woman, lost control of her car because of a medical issue.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mission Federal Credit Union at Clairemont Town Square, Martinez said in a news release. The driver was headed west on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Clairemont Drive when she lost control of her 2017 Honda Accord, which was carrying two children, ages 5 and 2.
Police did not disclose more about the medical issue, but said it caused the woman to strike a parked vehicle before smashing through the side of the building. Footage from OnScene TV showed the car also knocked down a street sign and guardrail as it hopped a curb and traversed a grassy berm before crashing into the credit union.
Paramedics took the injured employee to a hospital for treatment, Martinez said. The driver and two children in her car were not injured.
In a statement, a Mission Federal Credit Union spokesperson confirmed the employee was injured and taken to a hospital, and said the Clairemont branch would be closed until further notice.
“We are grateful for the swift actions of our employees, and our first responders, to ensure everyone’s safety immediately following the (crash),” the spokesperson said. "... Mission Fed’s top priority is the safety and well-being of our employees and members.”
The Police Department’s traffic division is investigating the crash.
