BEREA, Ohio –

Theft: West Bagley Road

The co-owner of Perk Cup Café & Grille, 561 West Bagley, called police at about 3 p.m. June 17 and asked them to stand by as she confronted an employee about her stealing more than $9,000 from the restaurant over 18 months.

As police watched, the restaurant co-owner showed the employee evidence that since January 2020, she had accepted cash from customers for meal payments, incorrectly entered the payments into the restaurant’s system as cashless gift-card or bonus rewards payments and then pocketed the cash.

The employee initially denied taking the money, saying the cash registers were wrong. She added, however, that she would rather pay the restaurant the $9,000 than be charged with theft. Then she admitted taking $150, but no more, from the restaurant several months ago.

The co-owner said she would check the restaurant’s records to see if the employee had stolen additional money prior to 2020.

Arrest warrant served, marijuana possession: Front Street

A wanted Cleveland man, 21, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. June 21 after police found three baggies of marijuana and more than $7,400 in cash in his Chevrolet Malibu.

Police recognized the man as he turned his car from West Bagley Road onto northbound Front. They knew Cleveland police wanted him for felonious assault with a firearm. Police stopped the man’s car on Front near Thacker Street.

Police ordered the man out of the car and placed him in handcuffs. A woman passenger told police there was marijuana and a bottle of alcohol in the car. The money police found was in stacks of 100-, 50- and 20-dollar bills, held together with rubber bands, and there were also single 10-dollar and five-dollar bills.

When asked about the money, the woman said she and the man had earned it while working at Dunkin’ and as a delivery driver, respectively. She said they save their money and that they carry it in cash because they’d “had issues” with several banks.

Marijuana possession: Ohio 237

Police confiscated a marijuana cigar at about 12:30 a.m. June 18 from the car of a 21-year-old wanted man from Cleveland.

Police randomly checked the man’s license-plate number after seeing his car in the parking lot of Speedway at 237 and Sheldon Road. They learned that several warrants had been issued for the man’s arrest.

The man drove out of the parking lot and turned onto 237 northbound. Police activated their overhead lights and sirens and stopped the man’s car. He said he knew about the warrants when police asked him about them.

Police searched the man for weapons and found none. They called Strongsville, which had issued one of the arrest warrants, but Strongsville police didn’t want to take the man into custody at that time. They asked Berea police to “advise and release” him.

The man was also wanted in Lake County, but that area was out of the police “pickup radius.”

Police smelled marijuana in the man’s car, and he admitted that he had a marijuana cigar. After taking the cigar, police let the man go.
