Rome Health has announced that AnneMarie Walker-Czyz, RN, Ed. D., NEA-BC, has been selected as Rome Health’s president and chief executive officer, effective March 1.
The announcement was made by Board of Trustees President Ankur Desai, M.D.
Mark E. Murphy, RN, NP, who has served as CEO since November 2019 will return to St. Joseph’s Health and resume his role as vice president, chief strategy officer. At the board’s request, Murphy will continue to serve as a liaison between both organizations.
“The board is grateful to Mark for serving as the hospital’s chief executive officer through the challenges of the COVID pandemic,” Desai said.
“He willingly extended his role beyond the initial 90-day interim period to provide stability. Now that we’re on the other side of the recent surge, AnneMarie will lead us as we continue to advance our strategic objectives to provide easy access to the highest quality care here for our community.”
“Last September, we welcomed AnneMarie to the senior leadership team as a consultant to provide additional operational support to the hospital to position us for long-term success,” said Desai. “With her demonstrated leadership, we are pleased that she has accepted her new role as president and CEO. She has a proven track record for building strong teams to advance patient-centered care and deliver strong business results.”
Walker-Czyz has more than two decades of service to St. Joseph’s Health. In addition to her role as chief nursing officer, she has served as the vice president of clinical and educational services and chief operating officer at St. Joseph’s Health.
Her experience in leading a team of nurses and health care colleagues in the day-to-day delivery of patient care will assist Rome Health in its mission to deliver quality healthcare with compassion, the announcement said. Walker-Czyz will continue to foster strategic collaboration between Rome Health and St. Joseph’s Health to collaboratively address the needs and care for the community, it added.

Employed at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital since 1997, Walker-Czyz earned her nursing degree from the St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. She also holds a master’s degree from Upstate Medical University.
In 2015, Walker-Czyz graduated from St. John Fisher College earning an education doctorate degree in executive leadership with research areas of interest in the impact of innovation adoption on quality and cost in nursing care.
Walker-Czyz is also certified as a nurse executive from the ANCC.
The announcement adds that her passions lie in the promotion of shared governance and promoting nursing leadership at the point of care delivery, transforming acute care services to be consistent with the overall strategy for health care reform and developing multidisciplinary teams to achieve higher quality, safety, and patient engagement at a lower cost.
Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo said she was impressed by Walker-Czyz’s credentials and appreciates she already has experience working with the Rome Hospital team on special projects.
“I think AnneMarie is going to do wonderful things for the the Rome Health System,” said Izzo. “I know she will point us in a real positive direction.”
In addition to having experience working with Rome Hospital administration, the mayor said Walker-Czyz’s background in clinical medicine will also be an asset to building a collaborative relationship with staff.
Izzo also said CEO Murphy should be commended for his service to the hospital and community, especially through such a challenging time.
“He and his team have done an outstanding job, giving tremendous care to patients not only during routine procedures or surgeries, but particularly through COVID,” she said.
Rome Health is in the midst of a $13.1 million capital project to create a new Physician Center on its main campus at 1500 N. James St.
Pending state approval, Rome Health expects to begin construction in August 2021, with the new Physician Center opening in June 2022. When complete, providers from the hospital’s affiliated practices will relocate to the new center. These include primary care providers from Rome Medical Group and Delta Medical, as well as many of the specialists from Rome Medical Practice.
The project involves renovating existing administrative space on the ground floor and first floor and finishing the open space under the Bartlett Wing, which faces Black River Boulevard.
Rome Health and its affiliated primary care and specialty practices employ 695 full-time equivalent employees.
