A Towamensing Elementary employee tested positive for COVID-19, Palmerton Area School District officials announced Tuesday night.

The employee was last in school on Friday and is under the care of a doctor.

“At this time I don’t believe any students or employees were in close contact with this employee while she was at work last week, but the Department of Health will verify this through their formal contact tracing,” Superintendent Dr. Jodi Frankelli said in a letter regarding the positive test. “We will assist our public health officials with this process.”

The positive test comes in the same week Carbon County moved to the substantial phase of COVID-19 community transmission, according to Department of Health data.

“I will continue to monitor Carbon County’s COVID-19 rates and impact being seen in the district,” Frankelli said in the letter to parents. “Please understand that a short-term closure could occur at any of our schools with little notice. A closure like this would result in all students at the impacted school attending classes from home during a specified period of time. Please be proactive and have a plan in place for your family.”

Palmerton has had four senior high school students, two junior high school students, a junior high school employee, an S.S. Palmer student and now a Towamensing Elementary employee test positive since the start of the school year.
