Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis have named Michael Goar as their next president and chief executive officer.

Goar, who is currently the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities, previously held executive and chief operating officer positions in Memphis City Schools, Boston and Minneapolis public schools as well as Generation Next, a youth development organization in the Twin Cities. He will succeed current CEO and president Tim Marx.

Michael Goar, who will assume his presidential position for Catholic Charities on Jan. 4, 2021, says he grew up experiencing homelessness and hunger. Currently, he is finishing up his role as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities.

“My work always has been all about eliminating (the) opportunity gap, achievement gap, providing young people with a fair life chance and ending the cycle of poverty,” said Goar. “Being part of Catholic Charities allows me to fulfill my mission in life.”

Catholic Charities is a non-profit organization that serves nearly 23,000 people annually, and has been around for 150 years. They focus on helping and advocating for vulnerable and poor members of the Twin Cities community.

They do this through helping eliminate hunger and homelessness. One of their most well-known locations includes the Dorothy Day Place and Residence, formerly known as the Dorothy Day Center.

Goar, who is biracial, was born and raised in an orphanage in South Korea. His father was African American while his mother was Korean.

“Growing up in that sort of community and that sort of culture, being biracial was never accepted,” Goar said. “I personally experienced homelessness and hunger when I was a young kid.”

He was adopted when he was 12-years-old by the Goar family. Goar said his adoptive parents gave him a new life chance that led him on a new pathway to help children and those in need.

His new position — which he starts on Jan. 4 — comes with a few challenges, however. Goar said as demand is increasing, especially under the pandemic, Catholic Charities needs to make sure they continue to have resources and practice financial sustainability in order to meet people’s needs.

“We’ll need to have a sense of grace, right?” Goar said. “No one person can accomplish such a large goal, but collectively I’m hoping that [we’ll] have collected will.”

Goar also stressed the need to take care of employees and front-line workers’ mental health and well being. They will also be affected by the difficulties of the current pandemic and political climate, as well as the rise in demand for services, Goar said.

“I am impressed with Michael’s passion and his grasp of the complex and dynamic environment in which service and social justice advocacy organizations like ours operate,” Tim Marx said. “I’m delighted that he’ll be succeeding me, and I will do everything possible to make his transition seamless and successful.”
